Pattaya by the Numbers
Introduction to Pattaya
Pattaya is a city on the eastern Gulf coast of Thailand, about 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. Known for its beaches, water sports, and vibrant nightlife, Pattaya has evolved from a quiet fishing village into one of Southeast Asia's most popular tourist destinations.
Today, Pattaya is home to a diverse international community, with residents from over 100 countries calling the city home. The city offers a unique blend of Thai culture and international influences, making it an attractive destination for tourists, retirees, and digital nomads alike.
Originally a quiet fishing village on the eastern Gulf of Thailand, Pattaya has transformed into one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic cities. Located just 147km southeast of Bangkok in Chonburi Province, the city spans approximately 22.2 square kilometers and governs itself as a special autonomous city — the only one in Thailand outside Bangkok.
Demographics & Population
While officially registered at ~120,000, Pattaya's actual daily population exceeds 500,000 when accounting for unregistered Thai workers and foreign residents. The city is one of the most internationally diverse in Thailand.
Economy & Key Industries
Pattaya contributes over ฿200 billion annually to Chonburi province's GDP. The city is a key node in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) — a government mega-project aiming to transform the eastern seaboard into a technology and innovation hub.
